Aurelio Mistruzzi, annual medal of 14th year of pontificate of Pius XII, commemorating the discovery of the tomb of St. Peter, 1952, bronze, 44.00 mm
After the election, Pius XII decided to start up excavations below the papal altar and in the surrounding area which led to the discovery of a pagan and Christian necropolis, the sepulchre in which the body of Saint Peter was deposited right after his glorious martyrdom, as well as the remains of the sepulchral monument - the tropaeum - erected over the tomb itself with graffiti going back to the times of the persecutions. The important discovery was celebrated by the annual medal of 1952.
