After the election, Pius XII decided to start up excavations below the papal altar and in the surrounding area which led to the discovery of a pagan and Christian necropolis, the sepulchre in which the body of Saint Peter was deposited right after his glorious martyrdom, as well as the remains of the sepulchral monument - the tropaeum - erected over the tomb itself with graffiti going back to the times of the persecutions. The important discovery was celebrated by the annual medal of 1952.
