On 29th June 1868, Pius IX had signed the bull with which he had called an Ecumenical Council in the Vatican, scheduling its opening for December 8th 1869. The opening of the Council was celebrated by many medals, but that created by the engraver Bianchi certainly stands out among them. It captures the attention for its reverse which bears an imposing vision of the interior of the Vatican Basilica.
