On April 18th 1506 Julius II went to the foundations of the new Vatican basilica where he deposited a few medals bearing the design of the new Basilica made by Bramante on the reverse. Contrary to the opinion of many modern scholars, the engraver chose to represent the apse of the new Basilica as the works commissioned by Julius II affected that area.
