Makarios
RGK III/A, n. 396
Makarios, a monk of S. Salvatore of Messina, was a prolific scribe at the end of the 13th century. He worked in Messina and in Grottaferrata, where he copied most of the ca. fifteen manuscripts which can be attributed to his hand. His undersigning does not settle the question of whether he finished his work on Vat. gr. 770 in the scriptorium of Messina or Grottaferrata. Nevertheless, more arguments support the location of Grottaferrata, since other manuscripts with very close scripts are held in Grottaferrata, as well as the recycled texts featured in another manuscript, a Lectionary produced in and for Grottaferrata (Crypt. A.δ.VI).
«This Prophetologion was copied by the hand of the negligent, humble and unworthy monk, Makarios from the great monastery of San Salvatore of Messina, at the wish and costs of the honorable and very illustrious Blaise, ecclesiarch of the monastery of the Holiest Mother of God of Grottaferrata; all brethren who open this book should pray for [these] two so that the Lord God may welcome them into the kingdom of the just. Amen, amen, let it be so, amen:- Year 6788 [= 1279/1280]»
