Vatican Palimpsests Digital Recovery of Erased Identities [by A. Németh]

Armenian

A bifolio of Vat. sir. 623, pt. 2 (ff. 214 + 215) includes a fragment from the Armenian redaction of the Protoevangelium of James, an Apocryphal Gospel on the infancy of Virgin Mary. The New Testament Apocryphal texts constitute important early witnesses to Jesus’ life, to his teachings or to the Virgin Mary. These texts which mostly were composed as early as the canonical books of the New Testament finally have not gained canonical status within the Bible; nevertheless, the same texts have made a significant contribution to Christian tradition. The recycled Armenian bifolio dates to sometime before 886, when the collection of Christian sermons in Syriac was copied on a large collection of recycled parchment sheets.
