Curatorial narrative
Vat. gr. 21 contains the Erotemata, a grammatical work in the form of questions and answers, written by the Byzantine Grammarian, Manuel Moschopoulos. This text was copied on folios recycled from four different manuscripts. George Baiophoros, the scribe who completed the actual manuscript in 1423 (f. 112v) and wrote or annotated several other Vatican manuscripts (Vat. gr. 19, Vat. gr. 157 and Urb. gr. 154), used many recycled folios from four earlier codices as protective flyleaves in the front (ff. III) and recycled folios from two earlier manuscripts at the back – one of them is a palimpsest – as writing surface in Constantinople. The manuscript arrived to the Vatican Library from Cristoforo Garatone (1398-1448) probably in the fifteenth-century. The list of contents in the front (ff. I-II) was added in the seventeenth century.
