Vatican Palimpsests Digital Recovery of Erased Identities [by A. Németh]

Vat.gr.903 <inf.1-5>

The manuscript contains the Homeric Iliad (Α 62 - Ω 587) from the twelve century, accompanied by Didymus’ commentaries (scholia minora). It contains recycled fragments from five different manuscripts: a liturgical codex from the 10th-11th century, texts on ascetic wisdom from the 8th-9th century (e.g. f. 179r), extensive fragments from two codices containing sections of the imperial collection of Roman law, the so-called Basilica from the 10th century (inf. 3-4: ff. 177r + 176v, ff. 210v + 211r). Over its long period of use, it suffered damages of different kinds. One particular folio (f. 15) lost its lower half which had completed in the 14th or early 15th century, and was replaced by a recycled parchment folio that itself had been rewritten several times. Thus, this folio preserves multiple layers of rewritten texts.
