Vatican Palimpsests Digital Recovery of Erased Identities [by A. Németh]

Vat.gr.316 <inf.2>

Vat. gr. 316 contains various works of John Italus, the Neoplatonic Byzantine philosopher of Calabrian origin who made his career in Constantinople. This collection of puzzling philosophical questions and their solutions was copied in Baroque Salentine Style in the 13th century. The scribe used materials from two recycled codices. Most folded recycled parchment folios derive from a massive ninth-century codex that contained various works of Philo of Alexandria (ca. 20 BC - ca. 45 AD). This earlier manuscript constitutes a very early and important witness to all the texts it contains. In the form of offset imprints of portions of texts, three bifolios (ff. 94 + 101, 95 + 100, 99 + 96) preserve traces of the process of erasing the ancient script and rewriting the treated parchment sheets (e.g. ff. 99v + 96r). The other recycled codex contained passages from the Old Testament (Vat. gr. 316 <inf. 1>).
