Vat. gr. 19 contains the Schedographia of the Byzantine Grammarian, Manuel Moschopoulos. In this work, the Byzantine author presents examples drawn from Biblical and Homeric topics to serve as educational exercises by grammatical analysis. George Baiophoros, the scribe who completed the current manuscript in 1425 (f. 118v) and wrote or annotated several other Vatican manuscripts (Vat. gr. 21, Vat. gr. 157 and Urb. gr. 154), used many recycled folios from four earlier codices. The manuscript preserves its original Byzantine binding produced at the Prodromos Monastery. The manuscript probably arrived to the Vatican Library from the possession of Cristoforo Garatone (1398-1448) in the fifteenth century.
An erased but not rewritten bifolio of Vat. gr. 19 (ff. I + IV) preserves a fragment from the Life of Saint Eustratius and his companions who died as martyrs in Sebaste (present-day Sivas in Turkey) in the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian (284-305). Saint Eustratius was burned alive on 13 December which later became his feast day. That is why this text entered the December volume of the Hagiographic endeavour of Symeon Metaphrastes who standardized the Saints' Lives in the tenth century according to their feasts featured in the liturgical calendar. The new standardized collection soon became widespread. Many copies were produced in the eleventh century in large parchment codices which later proved to be a durable recycled writing surface when the original manuscripts went out of use. In Vat. gr. 19, an erased folio was folded in half and inserted as protective flyleaves in the Prodromos Monastery in Constantinople where George Baiophoros, the scribe of this manuscript, was active in the early fifteenth century.
