Vatican Palimpsests Digital Recovery of Erased Identities [by A. Németh]

Vat.gr.1853 <inf.1.1-1.2>

This manuscript, completed in 1173 by the priest Theodoros, is a liturgical book containing the paracletic canons, a collection of hymns to Jesus Christ, to the Mother of God and various Saints. It contains recycled texts, including a section from the Gospel of Matthew, perhaps a lectionary itself. This erased text was partially copied on folios that had been taken from the September volume of a premetaphrastic menologion from the early 10th century. Interestingly enough, the more recent lower text (Gospel of Matthew) is almost illegible due to the use of chemical reagents, which removed it. The manuscript had been unbound and its bifolios are now rebound in a way that facilitates the reading of the lower texts.
