Whisk broom

The badge of the whisk broom (or brush, bristle brush, duster) was inherited from Francesco Sforza, duke of Milan (d. 1466), like that of the two horse bits, with which it corresponded, according to their metaphorical meaning in the ethical sphere (see Lombardi, I simboli, p. 139; Fenucci, Notes, p. 84). The motto is scopis mundata, which illustrates the desire for moral purity. Some have connected this to the dissolution of the “stain” of Federico’s birth which was not legitimate but legitimized (see quarterly coat of arms). The whisk broom is represented both in the illustrative apparatus of the manuscripts, in the rooms of the Ducal Palace, and in particular in the Studiolo (see Cheles, Lo Studiolo di Urbino, pp. 68, 72, 74, 75; Raggio, Lo Studiolo, p. 118, fig. 5-68; Wilmering, Le tarsie, p. 107 fig. 2-63, 2-64).
