Gundisalvus Hispanus

1450-1511

Albinia de la Mare has suggested an identification of Gundisalvus Hispanus with Gonzalo Fernández de Heredia (1450-1511), a student of canon law in Pisa from 1473 to 1474, a period in which he was probably active as a scribe in Florence, where in all certainty he worked from 1475 to 1476 and in 1478 for illustrious clients such as Lorenzo de’ Medici. In 1478 he was appointed bishop of Barcelona and ceased his activity as a calligrapher. He then became archbishop of Tarragona in 1480. He also produced precious codices for Lorenzo de’ Medici and Matthias Corvinus. There are about 23 codices undersigned by him or attributed to him, including 5 Urbinati: Urb. lat. 34 (unsigned), Urb. lat. 54 (signed «G.», f. 296v), Urb. lat. 263 («G. hispannus», f. 171v), Urb. lat. 280 («GunDisalvus hispanus. Scriptor indignus»), Urb. lat. 491 («G. hispanus», f. 163v).
