In 1547 Paul III decided to celebrate the reconstruction works of the new Vatican Basilica with a medal. However, he did not choose to represent the project of the then director of the works, Michelangelo Buonarroti, but that conceived by Buonarroti's predecessor, Antonio da Sangallo.
