Since the first year of his pontificate, the pope had thought of having the central nave of the Basilica of St .Peter, the side aisles and the chapels embellished and covered with marble and decorations in anticipation of the Holy Year 1650. The works were entrusted to Bernini and they were celebrated by the annual medal of the 4th year of his pontificate.
