Curatorial narrative
This manuscript contains various works of John Italus, a Neoplatonic Byzantine philosopher of Calabrian origin who made his career in Constantinople. The codex contains his Quaestiones quodlibetales (ff. 1r-85r), his commentary on Aristotle’s Topica, Books 2-4 (ff. 85r-125r), and his De dialectica addressed to Emperor Andronicus Comnenus (ff. 125r-134v), his De syllogismis (134v-141v), and his De rhetorica (ff. 141v-145v). This collection of puzzling philosophical questions and their solutions was copied in Baroque Salentine Style in the 13th century. The scribe used folded recycled parchment folios that all derive from the identical massive ninth-century codex that contained various works of Philo of Alexandria, a very early and important witness to all texts it contains. A bifolio was added to the front of the codex (ff. III-IV) with a letter that Georgius Bardanes, the Metropolitan of Corfu, wrote to Emperor Frederic II. There is another letter at the end (f. 167) with the story of a refugee from Calabria to the Greeks. Both folios are palimpsests and derive from a tenth-century codex and includes passages from the Old Testament.
