Coming from a famous Florentine family of artists−Cosimo Rosselli was his elder brother−he was perhaps formed at the workshop of Francesco di Antonio del Chierico and had interests in goldsmithery, cartography, perhaps also painting for large-sized works. He was active in book decoration probably until the eighties, when he became the court illuminator for the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490). Rosselli then devoted himself to engraving, beginning with the decoration of the chorales of the Opera del Duomo of Siena between December 1470 and March 1471. He then moved to the service of the Medici, creating a series of exemplars containing classics−see for example, Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 84. 1, Plut. 46. 12−and Books of the Hours, in the following decade−see Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 23639; Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Ashb. 1874. From the seventies of the fifteenth century onward, Vespasiano da Bisticci included Rosselli in the circle of illuminators who worked on the composition of Federico da Montefeltro’s collection several times. In this context, often together with his workshop, he worked on a vast number of mss., such as Urb. lat. 52, Urb. lat. 491, Urb. lat. 277, and some images in the Bible, Urb. lat. 1-2.
